The corrosion of reinforced steel is a universal problem in concrete. It is one of the primary reasons for loss of durability of concrete. Proper compacting and leaving no voids is how the rate of corrosion can be controlled. Even in properly compacted concrete, there is a 1-2% chance of voids through which moisture can pass leading to corrosion of steel. Steel embedded in concrete can expand 5-6 times more than its original volume due to corrosion, causing stress and cracks. These cracks further expose the steel and further the corrosion process.
Hindustan RMC has introduced a special concrete called 'Rust Proof' to overcome corrosion problems. It uses anti-corrosion agents that form a protective coating over the steel diminishing the rate of corrosion of embedded steel. Thus, the steel and the entire structure stays intact for long.
